Appointment of GMC Legal Assessors

The Times (Notice) - Tuesday 14th May 2002

The GMC appoints Legal Assessors to sit with its fitness to practice committees to advise on questions of law arising in the proceedings before them in accordance with Paragraph 7 of Schedule 4 to the Medical Act 1983. The 1983 Act provides that Legal Assessors shall be barristers, advocates or solicitors of at least 10 years standing.

Legal Assessors may not represent any parties in proceedings before the fitness to practice committees nor in any proceedings relating to an appeal against a decision by one of those committees. Applicants are expected to commit to sitting at least 30 days each year, must have relevant judicial or adjudicatory experience and must be aged 70 or under at the time of appointment.

Applications are welcome from both men and women but are particularly welcome from women and individuals from minority groups because they are under-represented in this role.
